WCTSMA as usual makes great showing at Nationals!

National results are in!

As usual, WCTSMA made a great showing at Nationals.

In the intermediate schools division, WCTSMA took 6 of the top 10 positions in the category. Monroe was 10th followed by Ferndale 9th, North Kitsap 8th, Auburn 7th, and Auburn Mountview 6th. Mt. Spokane surged to Number 2 in the division and 2nd overall Nationally for all schools.

In the large school division the battle for supremacy continues between Kent Meridian and Wenatchee. Kent Meridian finished just behind Wenatchee in 3 place in the division with the Panthers finishing 2nd. Valencia High School topped the division in 1st.

The icing on the cake was Mt. Spokane finishing just ahead of Valencia for 2nd overall Nationally. Way to go WCTSMA! You represent Washington well.

Kent Meridian and Mt. Spokane finish 1st and 4th in California Regional Competition

AACI, Saint Francis HS, and California State Northridge were set to host the 2020 California High School Sports Medicine Competition March 21st. Due to COVID-19, the test was administered online in student homes throughout the country.

Kent Meridian won the small school category. All 11 K-M students finished in the top 50 for scoring. Phoebe C. finished 3rd in the intermediate sports medicine division. State Officer Hamdia A. finished 6th and Karl A. finished 2nd in the advanced division. Stacie V finished 5th in medical terminology.

Mt Spokane finished 4th overall in the small school category behind K-M. 9 students competed online with 2 finishing in the top 10 in their categories. Jon H. finished 5th in intermediate sports medicine. 2020-21 State Officer candidate, Zeke M. finished 8th. Abigail W. from Mt. Spokane won the small school category for medical terminology.

Great job Kent Meridian and Mt. Spokane in representing WCTSMA in California! Watch the website as Mt. Spokane is planning to participate in the National Competition. I did not get clarification on K-M, but I am almost certain they will be competing in Nationals also.

Remember, due to COVID-19 and canceling of our State event, Nationals is open to ALL Washington schools interested in challenging for National honors. Please see the link on this home page to register. You can always contact me with questions regarding the National event also.

Nationals Open to All WCTSMA member schools

I have been informed on April 1, 2020 that all WCTSMA member schools will be waived of qualifying requirements for the National Competition. That means all WCTSMA member schools can compete in the National Championships May 13-21, 2020. The link to the competition is in the left sidebar column on our website under “important dates and reminders.” You can contact Eli Hallak directly with questions at 818-642-7238. Information is also available at www.aacitest.com. As usual, you can always contact me with any questions you have regarding any WCTSMA activities.

WCTSMA Board of Director positions open for nominations

We are currently accepting nominations for Vice President and Secretary. Please nominate instructors by contacting any current BOD members with your nomination. Nominees will submit a short biography to me stating why they are applying and some general work history for review by all adviser members prior to voting. Voting will be done via Google. Please watch for further instructions in the coming days. Feel free to get nominations in starting today. Again, if you have questions don’t hesitate to contact myself or any BOD adviser member.

Student Leadership Board votes to pursue Virtual SLC if school resumes

Your State Officer group has decided to seek options for virtual state leader conferencing if school resumes. Please watch for an email to be sent out Monday 3/23/20 outlining the current plan finalized by the WCTSMA Board of Directors 3/20/20 after 3 hours of deliberation by both leadership groups working together.

Scholarships, awards, State Officer interviews and BOD positions will all be business as usual as we move forward with plans. Please check for new deadlines and procedures for these topics. Some have been tentatively posted.

Obviously, this plan is contingent on many factors that are changing both daily and hourly. Please, everyone practice safe social distancing and love on your family as many comply with current recommendations to stay home to try to flatten the curve for the spread of COVID-19.

Spokane Canceled for 2020. Tentatively Returning in 2021.

After a very long and passionate conversation last night, we as a board are providing the following update:

  1.  With all the schools in our state closed until at least Friday, April 24th, we can no longer host our annual state competition in Spokane.  Please see items #4-#8 for an alternative option we are considering.  We are working with both Spokane and Tacoma to push back contracts in order to save contract fees so we can provide refunds.  Yup, next year we are in Spokane!

  2. By the end of this week we will be touching base regarding refunds for schools that had registered for state.  Thank you for your patience.

  3. Please remember to cancel hotel reservations and additional field trip accommodations you have already made.

  4. We are attaching a survey that we are asking you to share with your sports medicine students that were going to attend Spokane to see how much interest there is for an online test later this spring.  Please e-mail your students the following link and have them complete it by Thursday, March 19th if they would like their voice to be heard.   https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Y8MPZK6

  5. As instructors, we want your feedback too!  Please complete this simple survey by Thursday, March 19th to have your voices heard.  https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/YVXW7H5

  6. We are considering, if feasible, an online test the end of May.  This will be an individual exam with no team awards.  Schools may have up to 14 students participate (due to scoring, we cannot make it a free-for-all).  We are also considering a Facetime Practical for our top scoring students but are working to determine what that looks like.  More to come based on the survey results that the student board will review on Friday prior to our board of director meeting Friday evening.

  7. The cost of the online test is still TBD but will be minimal and only cover the cost of the test and proctors.

  8. Please understand that the online test, if we move ahead, is subject to change with the changes our state makes regarding school surrounding COVID-19.

  9. We are moving ahead with Scholarships, Instructor of the Year, and State Champion Plaques.  All deadlines are being followed as they are shown on the website.

  10. We will be working with the student board to formulate a plan for interviews and state officer elections.  All deadlines are being followed as they are shown on the website.

  11. For the board of directors, the following positions are open and seeking candidates:  Vice President and Secretary.  Please follow as deadlines as shown on the website.

As a board, tonight was the toughest conversation we have had and it ended with no clear decision.  Like our current state, it ended with more questions needing answers before we could definitively say no state or yes, let's do an online test!  As instructors we are ALL IN for our kids.  Please know we are working hard to make what we feel is the best decision for our students.  We meet again on Friday and will have a definitive answer for you on Saturday.

Thank you!

Sincerely,

The WCTSMA Board
